Chevrolet swung for fences with the all-new 2018 Chevy Equinox and, in most cases, they hit the mark. From its pleasant and deeply functional hut, the occupants benefit from a range of useful technologies as well as efficient performance facilitated by a range of all-turbo engines. Infused with previously invisible refinement levels, the latest Equinox could be a perfect first and last step in your SUV.
2018 Chevy Equinox Redesign
The 2018 Chevy Equinox closes the sedan-style grille in a single unified piece that is divided by a chrome frame on the bottom. The Cruze lends the lighthouses of the crossing of the same general shape, although the lights of the Equinox are not so aggressively swept in the wings. The profile definition features are a line of subtle characters that extends from the front wheel arch and then divides into the middle of the front doors. A line dives to the south integrating in the arch of the rear wheel and giving a sense of continuity to the line of cut between the rear bumper and the mudguard. The other line protrudes, cuts the door handles and connects the taillights to the front of the car. The D pillar has aggressive front racquet attachments to Chevrolet designers to avoid modeling of the floating roof while the rear side glass races into the rear flap. But it’s backwards where the Equinox design fails. The same large rear hatch which offers a considerable opening for loading the trunk betrays the tail of the crossover. Combined with a boring set of taillights, it’s hard not to look at the rear of the Equinox and see a minivan. This minimal mine returns the Equinox and an exterior style score slightly above average.
2018 Chevy Equinox Cabin Specs
The Equinox’s understated cab is inoffensive and quite pleasant, but compared to the Honda CR-V and the richer Mazda CX-5, the Chevy feels a little flat. More disturbing are the distracting reflections of the metal trim placed on the dash and around the speed selector. The visual weaknesses apart, a large center console, a well-placed telephone tray and tactical use of quality materials make the 2018 Chevy Equinox a welcoming and usable place to spend time. From the point of view of appearance, the infotainment system MyLink has evoked different opinions. One tester thought that the Windows 95 graphics on both screens put a serious damping on the inner mood while others thought the presentation looked very good. Otherwise, the system has praised universally for its logical design, its readable icons and standard smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. One note: the screen is subject to a tumor, so keep a microfiber towel handy.
2018 Chevy Equinox Powertrains
Two new four-cylinder turbocharged engines are available, including a 1.5-liter unit estimated at 170 bhp and 203 pound-feet of torque, and a 2.0 liter liter with about 252 hp and 260 lb.-ft. A 1.6-liter I-4 turbodiesel will also be available and Chevrolet expects it to have 136 hp and 236 lb.-ft. The small 1.5-liter turbo-four and the 1.6-liter I-4 turbodiesel are coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission and the 2.0-liter turbo-four is coupled to a new nine-speed automatic. EPA fuel economy estimates have not yet been published, but the Equinox diesel engine will be the most efficient at about 40 mpg on the highway. Gas-powered variants with front-wheel drive should reach up to 31 mpg on the highway with 1.5 liters and up to 28 mpg with 2.0 liters.
New for this year, the Equinox Chevrolet 2018 will be offered in L, LS, LT and Premier trimms. It was put up for sale at the end of March.
