After more than seven years, the Yeti was still a good seller in terms of sales last year, when Skoda shipped 95,600 units. Of course, it’s a lot less than the 436,000 Octavias delivered in 2016, but the pseudo crossover remains an important model for the Czech brand. The 2018 Skoda Yeti will have an even more mainstream look for its second generation.
This latest prototype reveals that the two cars will not share any exterior body panel, except perhaps the roof. At the front, the new generation SUV offers a unique treatment, which is a substantially reduced version of Kodiaq’s face, with a lighthouse split arrangement. On the side we can see the new Skoda crossover has its own set of door panels and fenders, with the characteristic fold of the brand’s shoulder line now positioned between the door handles and the window frames . Unlike the Tiguan, the Skoda crossover does not have exterior mirrors. At the rear, the small SUV seems to present a style that is once again riddled with the largest Kodiaq. It should be noted that the rear window is actually a black plastic panel and there are fake white panels around the taillight. There may be surprises. Despite its unique body, the new Skoda small crossover will share its mechanical package with the Tiguan, and will probably share its key dimensions with the Volkswagen short-wheelbase.
Inside, the Karoq presents the latest version of Skoda’s interior design, with four vertical vents punctuating the fascia, and the central infotainment screen mounted high and in the center of the dashboard. The car is a five-seater, and its longer wheelbase offers considerably more passenger space than in a Yeti, especially for rear-seat occupants.
Two gasoline engines and two diesel engines will be available at launch. TSI 1.0 liter and 1.5 liter petrol are equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, but can also be equipped with a seven-speed DSG gearbox. 1.6-liter and 148-hp 2.0-liter diesels can also be used with the DSG, while the latter is offered with the option of four-wheel drive.
