VW introduced the first-generation Tiguan for the 2007 model year as a compact SUV to compete with the benefits of Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Ford Escape. The original Tiguan was built on the same platform as the VW Golf and Jetta, and carried a two-liter engine. The model has been popular, selling over 700,000 units worldwide over the past 10 years as a small sport-based crossroads.
The new Tiguan reflects Volkswagen’s stated goal of moving firmly in the market segments of the family sedan and SUV. With the Atlas, the 2018 VW Tiguan Usa is designed primarily as a family vehicle. The changes made by VW are all oriented towards the creation of Tiguan as an attractive proposition for growing and active families.
The new Tiguan is one of the biggest players in the compact SUV segment, stretching 185 inches, an enormous 11 inches more than the previous model. It is also 2 inches longer than the Chevrolet Equinox and 4 inches longer than the Honda CR-V.
The interior is where the new Tiguan actually shines. The seats are comfortable and supportive, although the lumbar power adjusts only indoors and outdoors. The second row is very spacious, but the third row is tiny. Getting to the path is helped by an easy-to-reach lever that also allows the second row to sit and slide.
It is also premature to comment on the quality and performance of the interior of the new Tiguan but we retracted the advanced camouflage curtain to inspect the 8.0-inch central touchscreen encouraged by a pair of buttons for the volume and infotainment setting. One of the many menus available supports off-road driving with a display that shows a compass, steering angle, pitch and roll angles and engine oil temperature. A second electronic display between the speedometer and the tachometer transmits the navigation, travel and mileage information; we have not had the opportunity to study them in detail beyond the precision, conciseness and usefulness of these screens.
The engine’s power still comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, rated at 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. The transmission is an eight-speed automatic transmission, with the choice of the front-wheel drive buyer or the VW 4Motion all-wheel drive system. The Tiguan is supposed to tow up to 1,500 pounds.
To find out more, we rented one from Volkswagen before it went on sale later this fall. The price 2018 VW Tiguan Usa begins at $ 25,345 for the S-front cut and is $ 30,000 higher for a SEL version loaded with AWD
